I have definitely seen a resurgence in recent years of many people choosing these easy-to-wipe mats as the rug for their entry, porch, or kitchen. Since then, this type of flooring has continued to evolve into the vinyl we have today. Artists would paint intricate designs on them, and families would use them as durable, beautiful, easy to clean indoor floor coverings over their stone or hardwood floors. These floor coverings were hand made by heavily treating and painting a durable cloth with oil-based paint, then sealing them to make them waterproof. Vintage vinyl floor cloths were popular in Colonial American homes, but actually originated during the Renaissance. The hardy vinyl rugs cover the majority of the floor, protecting it from dirt and water that we bring in from the backyard. The white painted wood floors still look shiny and new, even with frequent mud tracking into the house. After a couple of months of having our new vinyl rugs, I’m so glad I went this route. I recently decided to repaint the floors and purchase durable vintage vinyl rugs (also called floor cloths) to provide a pretty, easy to clean floor covering for this space. First I painted them gray with a blue pattern, but the painted pattern sadly didn’t hold up well to the high traffic. When we renovated this entryway into a petite mudroom last year, I painted the wood floors with porch and floor paint as an affordable and cottage-style flooring option.
